HGV’s could soon be banned from overtaking on a 34-mile stretch of road in Oxfordshire and Berkshire following a vote by councillors.

Didcot East councillor Patrick Greene put forward the request in a bid to reduce accidents on the A34 between Junction 13 (M4) and Junction 9 (M40).

It received 51 votes in favour and nine abstentions at a recent Oxfordshire County Council meeting. A letter will now be sent to the Secretary of State for Transport.

Mr Greene said: “the council is concerned and alarmed at the recent number of major traffic accidents” and they believe a lot of problems are caused by lorries overtaking each other which in turn frustrates the standard car driver.

UK Haulier Managing Director has shared his concerns by stating: “if this comes in to fruition, it has the potential to cause major congestion and with the potential large number of HGV’s tailgating you will have a major safety hazard to other road users who are trying to join or exit the A34”
