With new partners including Millbrook, Chevron, RHA, Transdek and Hargreaves all joining the Centre for Sustainable Road Freight this year we now have a really excellent amalgam of skills and experience in our membership” asserts SRF Director, Prof. David Cebon. “Combined with the other freight operators, heavy vehicle industry partners, and our team at Cambridge and Heriot Watt Universities, the Centre incorporates both academic and industrial expertise in logistics, heavy vehicle engineering, human factors and sustainability. The only way to achieve deep reductions in CO2 emissions from the road freight sector is to integrate highly focussed engineering with systematic improvements to distribution and logistics. So we have the right team for the job.
The Centre is running more than a dozen research projects which address improvements in road transport efficiency and the reduction of its environmental impact, from the measurement and modelling of traffic congestion, to the development of decarbonisation guides, alternative fuels, and urban delivery vehicles. Each of the project teams includes academics and researchers from one or both of the universities, working with the industrial partners.
“Millbrook has 40 years experience working in partnership with industry to deliver engineering, testing and development solutions across a range of transport sectors, whilst Chevron bring lubricant and fuel efficiency expertise to our research. Hargreaves is one of the largest logistics providers in the United Kingdom, handling and transporting a wide range of bulk materials, while Transdek develops innovation-driven loading systems at the heart of the haulage industry” said Cebon.” Combine all that with the direct involvement of both the RHA and FTA membership and we are well founded to develop our roadmap of innovative technical and operational solutions to make road freight more efficient and sustainable”.
The Centre’s Chairman, Dave Rowlands, Technical Services Director of Wincanton, said: “Reducing fuel consumption and meeting sustainability targets are key priorities for road transport, so companies in our industry are keen to be involved in the work of the Centre.”
