To celebrate its 35th anniversary Read Plant Hire of Newport, Wales has taken delivery of a Volvo FM-330 4×2 rigid with an 8-tonne capacity VT801 Johnston sweeper body from Truck and Bus Wales & West, Newport.
The flagship sweeper, which heads a 22-strong fleet of trucks at the family-run business, is both the brainchild and pride & joy of Sean Barrett, son of Managing Director, Martyn Barrett.

Sean says: “To celebrate the company’s anniversary, my father and the other Directors, Michelle and Maxine, gave me the option to choose and specify my own truck. I’d had the chance to drive a Volvo FM once before, so it was pretty much a ‘fait accompli’ when given the choice. I really like the Volvo FM in terms of the way it drives, its styling, the performance and ride and overall comfort. Furthermore, the larger capacity Johnston body, brushes both sides and the 250 gallon water tank made possible with the Volvo FM means I can stay on site and sweep for longer, which offers real productivity gains.”

“Needless to say; taking delivery of his very own Volvo FM has more than lived up to Sean’s expectations. “I am so impressed,” he says. “The truck really looks the part and it performs just as well as it looks.”

Inside the Globetrotter cab featuring the single bunk package and a 1.8kW air-to-air night heater. Sean says he is already spoilt by the amount of space and storage. “I don’t think I could go back to a Day cab now,” he says. “The comfort of the leather, air-suspended seat with arm-rests is second-to-none. The ride in this truck puts it in a different league.”

The FM was specified with the Volvo D11K 330 hp engine I-Shift gearbox. Externally, Sean, who did an apprenticeship in auto-electrics before joining the family business, has fitted and wired in additional work lights as well as extra reversing lights.

The Durabright alloy wheels feature painted trims to match the main body and there’s Kelsa grille, Lo-Bar and roof mounted light bars.

Sean’s favourable impressions of the new truck are mirrored by Managing Director Martyn, who says: “We’re absolutely delighted with this acquisition. We enjoy a great relationship with Truck and Bus Wales & West and the support from the Newport dealership has been superb. This support is very much on-going as the new FM is covered by a 5-year Volvo Gold R&M contract.”
