Volvo Trucks UK & Ireland has officially opened its new Apprentice Training Centre. The manufacturer is investing more than £300,000 in the facility, located within Remit Training’s Automotive Academy, in Derby.

The move underlines Volvo Trucks’ commitment to its apprenticeship programme and the importance it places on providing its next generation of HGV technicians with rewarding career opportunities.

Karen Bailey, Head of Competence Development at Volvo Trucks UK & Ireland, says: “I’m proud to say we have always recognised the value that apprenticeships can bring to our business and the wider industry.

“The shortage of skilled technicians across the sector in recent years has been widely reported and is something we are doing our best to address. The Apprentice Training Centre is a phenomenal resource to have and we’re confident it will help to attract even more talent into our network, whilst also being a great introduction to the wealth of career opportunities available with Volvo Trucks.”

The new facility features three fully-equipped training bays, each large enough to house two trucks, plus a modern and newly furnished classroom. It was officially opened at a ceremony attended by Christian Coolsaet, Managing Director of Volvo Trucks UK & Ireland.

“This is a truly first-class training centre,” says Coolsaet. “Providing our apprentices with the right guidance and equipment to help take their careers forward is hugely important. We hope these men and women will form the backbone of our dealer network teams for years to come. Making this investment in their learning now, will only benefit our business in the future.”

Currently Volvo Trucks has more than 300 apprentices, including 20 women, taking part in its three-year apprenticeship scheme. The Level 3 Institute of Motor Industry (IMI) apprenticeship, supported by partner Remit Training, involves a mix of academic learning and on-the-job training.

“The number of young men and women who come through our apprentice scheme is growing by the year,” adds Bailey. “All of those that successfully complete the course will go into full-time employment as fully qualified HGV technicians. With the growth in demand for electric trucks, it’s a hugely exciting time to be joining the industry and with this best-in-class facility our apprentices will have all the tools and support they need to set them on their way to a long and successful career.”
