From 26 October 2020, the Direct Vision Standard (DVS) scheme will require HGVs over 12 tonnes entering or operating in London to have a safety permit.
The DVS scheme is being introduced by Transport for London (TfL). It will require all HGVs over 12 tonnes to get a safety permit to enter or operate in Greater London.
Using a star system, DVS will rate HGVs from zero (lowest) to five (highest) stars, based on how much a driver can see directly through their HGV cab windows.
To qualify for a permit, HGVs will be required to meet a minimum one-star rating or fit ‘safe system’ measures. A ‘safe system’ improves a vehicle’s overall safety through measures such as sensors, camera systems and visual warnings.
TfL’s stated intention is for the scheme to improve the safety of all road users, including pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.
The DVS scheme will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week within Greater London from 26 October 2020

What happens if I don’t have a permit?
HGVs over 12 tonnes driving in Greater London from 26 October 2020 without a permit or in contravention of permit conditions will be issued with a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) of £550 (reduced to £275 if paid within 14 days).
