Ryder has supplied the first Mercedes-Benz Econic tractor unit to go into service in the UK with leading fresh produce supplier Reynolds.
While Econic tractors have been tested in the UK, this is the first to go into service with a truck operator. This Econic 1835L 4×2 is derived from an 18t Econic rigid chassis and, as the first of its kind, served as a prototype for Mercedes-Benz, going through a rigorous step-by-step research and development process.
The tractor is plated at 31 tonnes and pulls an 11m Gray & Adams dual-temperature tandem trailer (also supplied by Ryder) with an undermount Carrier fridge; it replaces a 4×2 DAF tractor. The low-entry, high-visibility cab scores 5 stars on Transport for Londons Direct Vision Standard and is an excellent solution to the urban delivery challenge.
The truck operates from Reynolds Waltham Cross national distribution centre in Hertfordshire, and carries out multi-drop deliveries in London. Furthermore, the specification of the Powershift 3 transmission means the unit can be used for trunking to Reynolds satellite depots.
Reynolds already had experience of the Econic rigids and needed a trusted partner to source the tractor. Ryder has been a Reynolds partner for a number of years, supplying a range of fridge trailers, including some Gray & Adams longer semi-trailers, and tractor units on a rental basis. Ryder is maintaining the Econic tractor at its Rainham location.

We were happy to work with Ryder to bring the tractor into service.”
Reynolds is committed to running both a safe and innovative transport operation: “Were paying a premium for this tractor, but that premium is nothing in comparison with the safety benefit that the Econic provides. Driver feedback has been excellent: those that have driven it are very happy and have noted the superb visibility,” White added.
