Whittaker Coachbuilders International Limited of Gamston, near Retford, Nottinghamshire, has delivered what is believed to be the first new-series Volvo FL horsebox in the UK. The chassis was supplied by Crossroads Truck and Bus at Rotherham.

The new series FL horsebox was commissioned by Darren Price, a private buyer. Mr Price said that he chose the Volvo FL chassis because of the quality reputation of Volvo, the competitive price, the specification, the warranty and the dealer location for maintenance. “It is so easy to drive, quiet and economical,” he explained.

Whittaker’s reputation is founded on building bespoke horseboxes and a variety of other vehicles such as car and motorcycle race transporters.

The 16-tonne GVW FL 4×2 rigid is powered by the Volvo D8K 8-litre engine rated at 250 hp. Mr Price specified the I-Sync automated gearbox.

Both axles of the 5900mm wheelbase truck are air suspended. The passenger door has a low level window for improved visibility on the nearside and the bodywork has been designed so that the cab retains its tilt function for ease of maintenance. Overall length of the finished truck is 10,700mm. Unladen weight is 12,040Kgs and it is 4,000mm high. On board, there is air conditioned, secure accommodation for four horses and six people.

Whittaker’s coach built the bespoke bodywork from aluminium with various types of insulation and lightweight body struts and mainframe. The interior of the cab has been customised with ‘Vele’ leather upholstery with red stitching and piping.

According to Whittaker’s, the vehicle exterior is finished in a ‘Rolls-Royce’ paint colour known as ‘Cornish Cream’. The swooping lines of the vehicle livery are painted rather than decaled.

Details on the high quality bodywork include laser cut stainless steel bridle hooks in an exterior locker, polished stainless steel saddle racks, additional ‘gel’ batteries for additional long life power for the living accommodation and an on-board 5Kw diesel generator.

The interior of the living accommodation features solid and veneered walnut surfaces and storage units. Underfloor heating is fitted.

In addition to a 3 metre awning, the living accommodation slides out and extends on both sides of the bodywork thus making the most efficient use of the space available.
