Darlington-based road planing specialist Todds Highway Maintenance has taken delivery of two 7.2m and one 8.2m light steel half-pipe tipper trailers from Schmitz Cargobull to grow its fleet on the back of its ongoing business success.

The tippers join a fleet which currently consists of five tipper trailers, four low loaders and 14 rigid tippers, carrying aggregates and working in tandem with the company’s seven road planers – its core business activity.

Todds Highway Maintenance Director Graeme Todd says: “We have been running Schmitz Cargobull tippers since 2009 and have always been impressed by the design, build quality and the trailers’ overall performance. Transporting large volumes of material represents a significant cost to our business, so having a lightweight tri-axle tipper trailer allows us to maximise on payload, meaning fewer trips and therefore increased profitability.”

The new tipper trailers are manufactured using high-strength steel, which allows the unladen weight to be kept to a minimum while allowing for the maximum payload to be carried. Built at the Schmitz Cargobull factory in Gotha, Germany, the tippers feature a bolt-on, bolt-off construction, which removes much of the need for costly welding and paint repairs in the event of damage as parts are easily replaced.

The tippers also feature a 5mm trough floor and a steel top hinged tail gate, Schmitz Cargobull’s own ROTOS running gear, plus an electronic braking system with rollover stability programme.

The new assets will be used on regional projects for Todds Highway Maintenance in North Yorkshire, Cumbria, County Durham, Tyne & Wear and Northumberland. The trailers will work on a 24/7 basis and will remain with the fleet for six years before being replaced.

Todds Highway Maintenance began as a small family business operating initially in the North East of England back in 1996. Since then the company has grown to become one of the largest road planing contractors in the UK. Additionally the company is equipped to carry out all aspects of road and footway maintenance and boasts ancillary equipment including road sweepers, asphalt rollers, pavers and Bobcats.
