Bibby Distribution has added three new longer semi-trailers (LSTs) and five LPG converted MAN TGX tractor units to its Ultraframe fleet, as the 3PL continues to drive down transportation costs and reduce emissions for the Lancashire-based conservatory roofing manufacturer.
The new tractor units, which are expected to cover 200,000 kilometres annually, have already seen diesel usage drop by 20 per cent, with projected carbon emission reductions of over 10 per cent over the next five years.
The new trailers have a greater internal load space, which will allow Bibby Distribution to reduce road miles and therefore carbon emissions for Ultraframe, whilst improving fuel consumption and ultimately, making fewer deliveries. The LSTs will operate on trunking routes from the Ultraframe depot in Clitheroe to distribution centres in Glasgow, Avonmouth and Biggleswade.
The 15.65m LSTs feature a lower deck and smaller wheels, allowing for a taller trailer which reaches the maximum legal height of 4.96m. With an increased capacity of 35 per cent, the LSTs are able to accommodate six stillages in the front of the trailer and seven in the rear.
The trailers are used to carry pre-fabricated roofs, roof components and non-standard freight which includes the specially designed 6m long stillages, 7m length beams which can weigh up to 120kg and sheets of polycarbonate glazing.

The introduction of the new trailers on a permanent basis follows the trial of a loaned LST, which was a shared resource borrowed from another part of Bibby Distribution’s fleet.
The LSTs have been introduced as part of the 10-year Government trial in which Bibby Distribution is a core participant, operating 44 LSTs across the UK. To ensure complete driver and operator compliance with the regulations of the trial, Bibby Distribution has provided an on-site driver trainer at the Clitheroe depot to ensure its team are expertly trained in operating the longer articulated combinations.
Ultraframe specialises in conservatories, glazed extensions and orangeries, having installed more than one million conservatory roofs across the UK since its inception more than 25 years ago.
