Average speed cameras on the A9 in Scotland will be turned on today with the road being improved to increase safety.

The stretch of road between Perth and Inverness began construction back in May and it is now set to become operational.

But potentially even bigger news for HGV drivers is they have increased the speed limit from 4o mph to 50 mph in a pilot project trial.

They overall goal for both measures being put in place is to effectively reduce the accident rate on the A9, which is the main road between central Scotland and the Highlands and renowned for being one of the countries most dangerous.

The installation of the cameras is so the road route is turned in to a dual carriageway. The project to upgrade 80 miles of single carriageway along the A9 between Perth and Inverness is scheduled to be complete by 2025 at a staggering overall cost of £3 billion.
