British Sugar, which produces about half of all sugar in the UK, has awarded a new transport contract to Wincanton, the leading provider of innovative supply chain solutions.

Operating predominantly from British Sugar’s manufacturing base in Wissington, near Kings Lynn, Wincanton takes responsibility for transporting about 275,000 tonnes of packed sugar a year to locations across the UK.

In addition, logistics experts from Wincanton will work side by side with the customer’s management at its Peterborough head office to ensure operations are optimised for efficiency.

The three year contract was awarded to Wincanton following a rigorous tender process where British Sugar’s criteria were to find a transport partner that shared its own commitment to operational excellence and cost efficiency.

“At British Sugar, we strive to achieve excellence in service, production and distribution,” said Matt Lee, British Sugar’s commercial and supply chain director.

He added: “As the leading supplier of sugar to the UK market with a long and proud tradition, we maintain our position by anticipating and meeting the needs of our customers. When selecting a commercial partner, it is crucial that they can both match these standards and add value.”

To fulfil the contract Wincanton will utilise a substantial core fleet of vehicles supplemented by its own wide network and approved sub-contractors as and when required.

“This new contract is testament to the effectiveness of our solutions and we are delighted to welcome British Sugar to our growing transport portfolio”, said Chris Kingshott, Wincanton’s managing director.

“We are looking forward to developing a long term relationship with British Sugar through adding value through effective solutions, and delivering excellent customer service.”
