MiX Telematics (Europe) has once again been selected as the Post Office’s preferred telematics supplier and is now in the process of a nationwide upgrade of 265 cash-in-transit vans and mobile Post Offices as the Post Office migrates from its existing MiX Datatrak solution to MiX Fleet Manager.

“The driving force behind this move is our aim to enhance driver and road safety,” says Alex Goddard, Fleet Contracts Support Manager for the Post Office.  “We have a duty of care to our staff and the general public, and as a long-standing user of MiX Telematics’s products we appreciate the safety advantages they offer.  Nonetheless, when our Datatrak contract approached its end, we reviewed the market before deciding to remain with MiX Telematics.  We did so as we concluded the MiX solution is both cost-effective and very much in tune with our goals.”

In order to derive maximum benefit from the MiX solution, the Post Office has also chosen to install a MiX Telematics in-cab driver coaching aid.  By providing real-time feedback to the driver, the in-cab aid coaches drivers on their driving style and enables them to see when a series of pre-set key parameters are in danger of being exceeded.

Before opting for the MiX solution, the Post Office ran a proof-of-concept trial at its Belfast Unit with 15 vehicles equipped with MiX’s solution.  The vehicles were firstly operated for four weeks with the in-cab driver coaching aid disabled, followed by four weeks with it enabled.  During this time, all events were recorded and reported to the fleet manager.

“The results were dramatic,” comments Alex Goddard.  “Drivers were able to monitor their own performance and this resulted in a reduction in events recorded, there is no doubt in my mind that the system positively promotes driver and road safety – and as an operator whose fleet covers around four million miles a year, that is an extremely important factor for us.”

Richard Adams, MiX Telematics Sales Director (Europe) comments: “In practice our solutions lead to significant fuel savings, with vehicles being driven more calmly and smoothly – which in turn corresponds to a reduction in road risk and vehicle wear and tear.

“Our world-class solutions have been proving their value in commercial vehicle fleets around the globe for decades.  We are delighted with the Post Office’s decision to stay with MiX and upgrade their fleet.”
