A long-established Middleton transport firm is toasting 10 years of a fruitful partnership with the Fortec Distribution Network.

Joining the 80-strong national pallet network has reaped dividends for Matthews Transport, from reducing its own costs and delivering smaller consignments more cost effectively, to working with like-minded network members nationally, ensuring all their customers’ needs are met.

Jason Matthews, who heads the company along with his brother Steve and their parents Jim and Megan, said over the past 10 years Fortec had become an increasingly integral factor for the company as customers today generally expected a national, next-day delivery service.

He said: “The advantage of being with Fortec is the increased flexibility it gives us, coupled with cost efficiency. It means we don’t have to turn down the delivery of smaller consignments – something we would have to do without Fortec – and we are able to keep our costs down, which in turn benefits our customers.”

Launched by Jim and Megan in 1977, Matthews Transport celebrates its 40th anniversary in business next year.

Originally starting out as pallet makers and repairers the company’s fortunes took a turn when the couple were asked to move a load locally for a customer in Manchester – a company Matthews Transport still works for today.

Starting out with a workforce of five, the company today employs 25 people, serving customers across the Manchester area – including its very first customer who has been with the company over the four decades.

Dave Spong, Network Director of the Fortec Distribution Network commented: “Our congratulations of Jason and his team.  Our aim at Fortec is to encourage our members to grow and develop and offer them the necessary support to enable them to achieve this.

“It is great to see how Matthews Transport has expanded over the years and we wish them continued success for the future.”
