Chairman of Biffa plc & Wincanton plc

Biffa plc:

It is with very deep regret that the Board of Biffa plc (“Biffa”) has learnt of the sudden death of Steve Marshall. Steve had been Chairman of Biffa since June 2013.

David Martin, Senior Independent Director, will assume the role of Chairman on an interim basis until a new chairman is appointed.

Biffa Chief Executive Ian Wakelin, commented:

“We are deeply saddened at the news of Steve’s death. Steve played a guiding role in the recent development of the business, not least in our successful IPO. He will be very much missed and, on behalf of everyone at Biffa, I send heartfelt condolences to his family.”

In a statement to the Stock Exchange, Wincanton plc said:

“Steve… brought a wealth of the most senior business experience and wisdom to the role. He will be missed by all at Wincanton and by all who knew him. The Board’s sincere condolences go to his family.”

Wincanton senior independent director Stewart Oades will move to the role of chairman in the interim.

Steve Marshall was a former chairman of Balfour Beatty plc, Delta plc, Torex Retail plc and Queens’ Moat Houses plc, and was a non-executive at Halma plc and Southern Water. Mr Marshall’s executive career included group chief executive roles with Thorn plc and at Railtrack Group plc and earlier career included a number of roles at Grand Metropolitan plc (now Diageo plc), Burton Group plc and Black & Decker, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants and a governing council member.
