Specialist environmental contractors, McAuliffe Civil Engineering Ltd. of Wolverhampton has recently added five new Volvo FMX 8×4 rigid trucks to its fleet, all with Extra-High B Ride chassis and Volvo Powertronic fully-automatic transmission systems.

Supplied by Jamie Stanley, Sales Executive at Hartshorne Motor Services Ltd, the five Day-Cab fitted trucks are all powered by 420hp D13K engines.

“Volvo’s Powertronic is the only transmission system that will bring a fully-loaded rigid truck up very steep hills in quarries without requiring tow assistance,” declares Steve McAuliffe, Director at McAuliffe Civil Engineering Ltd.

A fully-automatic power-shift gearbox with both a torque converter and oil cooler; Powertronic is factory-fitted with a power take-off (PTO), an integrated retarder and an emergency power steering pump.

Steve adds, “We were the first UK tipper operators to adopt Volvo’s I-Shift automated gearbox over 15 years ago. In our operating environment, Powertronic is unequalled for off-road hill climbing.”

The group also feature Abba Predator tipper bodies and onboard weighing systems, along with Hyva hydraulics.

In addition, as Steve reports, “For maximum site safety we use automatic tailgates and sheeting systems that permit the driver to stay safe inside the cab at all times.”

Operating within a 50 to 60 mile radius of its Bilston base, McAuliffe Civil Engineering’s fleet of 26 trucks is predominately made up of Volvo trucks.

“Our association with Volvo Construction Equipment stretches back to 1978 and it seemed logical to stay with the marque when we started sourcing trucks around 20 years ago. We have our own workshops, but always utilise a two-year Volvo Service Contract with new purchases, which is carried out at Hartshorne’s Walsall dealerpoint. Volvo Trucks build a robust product and we just keep going back to them,” Steve explains.
