Continuous performance, driver appeal and overall life costs prompted Peterborough based operator, Chiltern Cold Storage to invest in the Next Generation Scania.

Specialising in custom transport solutions for ambient, frozen and chilled distribution, privately owned Chiltern Cold Storage are heavily reliant on fleet uptime to deliver under those all-important time restraints. Unsurprisingly, reliability plays a crucial role when selecting its fleet and Scania has proved its worth time and time again, making it the predominant marque in Chilterns fourty-six strong line-up.

The latest trucks, supplied by dealer TruckEast Limited, consist of two Scania R450 A 6×2/2 Highlines. A real head turner in their simplistic, yet striking, white and blue livery, the two next generation trucks are the first to enter the Chiltern’s fleet – soon to be followed by a further three later this year.

The new 44-tonners are powered by a 13-litre engine delivering 450hp with optimal efficiency thanks to the new fuel injector on the next generation models. Complete with a 2-pedal fully auto-shifted gearbox, it provides a smooth transition and drivers are able to focus on the road ahead rather than the next gear change.

Each pulling a brand new Gray & Adams 13.6 multi-temp fridge trailer, the R450’s will operate nationally throughout the UK and are already reported to be achieving over 12mpg on some trips.

Managing Director, Paul Jackson explains:

“Fuel returns so far are impressive, but that’s just one element. For me it’s got to be about the whole life cost – the quality of the product, its reliability and the dealer back up we get are just as important.”

On a three-year R & M, the next generation trucks will be maintained by TruckEast Peterborough, local to Chilterns head office and responsible for looking after their other Scanias.

“The general approach and response time of the team at TruckEast has always been excellent. We use our local branch for everything when it comes to the maintenance and they really do look after us. We have never had an issue on reliability with our Scanias. The network as a whole work hard to minimise downtime for their customers,” affirms Mr Jackson. “Any breakdowns we have experienced are met with efficiency and a supportive response to get my drivers back on the road,” he continues.

Last year Chilterns took delivery of thirteen current generation models and are firm advocates that it was already a great product. “With the next generation, Scania has by far surpassed themselves. It’s a smoother drive, the gearbox and engine capability have improved and the noise – well that’s just another level of quiet,” states Mr Jackson.

The next generation R cab boasts a completely new interior designed for an optimal driving position – with its modular instrument panel, intuitive controls and increased visibility. Furthermore, drivers are able to count on a good nights sleep thanks to the Sleeper cab’s comfort levels – hosting an easily accessible extending bunk with an air pocket sprung mattress.

“In this industry, driver recruitment and retention is an issue we all have to live with, but this is made so much easier by having a modern fleet with a good specification. With the Scania’s, the drivers just love the product. It’s a strong performer out on the road and offers a great working environment. In the new cabs it’s even more impressive,” comments Mr Jackson.

Since establishing in 1994, the company has expanded rapidly based on its excellent reputation in the competitive temperature controlled service and logistics sectors. This success is recognised by their most recent accolade of ‘Temperature Controlled Storage Operator of the Year, 2017’ awarded last month.
