Bibby Distribution has won two Gold Awards from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), thanks to its outstanding performance in implementing enhanced health and safety policies across its workforce.

The business has been recognised with Gold Awards in Fleet Safety and Occupational Safety, following Bibby Distribution’s first ever entry for the UK’s highest benchmark in safety.

Bibby Distribution’s safety success comes from an even greater focus on risk assessment, safe working and operating procedures, which saw a 39 per cent reduction in the number of incidents reportable to the HSE under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrence Regulations (RIDDOR).

Andrew Mawson, Head of Safety, Health, Environment and Quality at Bibby Distribution, says: “Nothing is more important than the health and safety of our colleagues, contractors and customers. That’s why we’ve invested in safer working practices to reinforce our already-robust processes, as we always want to improve. Our customers can be sure that in all our operations, we never compromise on doing the right thing for our people and our communities.”

Among the improvements implemented are a central tool for risk assessment which allows staff to make better safety decisions, with all senior managers at Bibby Distribution’s 90-plus sites across the country completing a Managing Safely qualification from the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).

In addition, the use of telematics to increase fleet efficiency and facilitate driver training also resulted in the number of vehicle accidents falling by 15 per cent.

Bibby Distribution’s efficiency improvements are the result of its long-term Road to Zero strategy, aimed at eventually leading to zero harm, zero waste and zero environmental impact from its operations.

The RoSPA Safety Awards recognise health and safety excellence, and are only awarded to businesses that demonstrate a commitment to implementing a range of health and safety practices.

As well as RoSPA, Bibby Distribution is also a member of the British Safety Council and works with the non-for-profit organisation to reduce risk, prevent injuries and promote health and well-being in the workplace.
