Engineers at the Port of Felixstowe, the UK’s busiest and largest container port, have voted to take strike action over outsourcing.

The union Unite has claimed that the port is transferring engineering jobs in a bid to cut costs.

116 engineers voted 98% to take strike action over a plan to transfer members of the tyre-fitting operation to another company, sources confirmed.

In 2018, the Port of Felixstowe handled 37% of the country’s container cargo. The port also loads 40 rail services a week and has a terminal that unloads and loads two daily ferries for HGVs. An industrial dispute would be detrimental, given the local economical reliance on the port.
