After many years of lobbying and Government engagement, the freight sector is finally being recognised for its importance to local and national economies.
The sector sits at the core of the UK economy, supporting over 2.5 million jobs and contributing £124 billion to the economy. It is estimated that the weight of goods transported by freight is expected to increase by 50% over the coming decades. This will all take place during a period of expected great technological change.
If the UK is to remain competitive and relevant in a post Brexit world then it is imperative that we invest in research and development, infrastructure and an appropriate regulatory framework.
SMMT will be working with the Department for Transport to develop a Future of Freight Strategy to support the sector, to continue to be a world leader to 2050 and beyond. We need to start preparing for the longer term now by addressing challenges including skills, evolving business models, congestion and the shift to zero carbon transport.
