Complex logistics support helped BBC’s DIY SOS team to transfer gold medal-winning Chelsea Flower Show garden to GOSH rooftop.
Logistics expert, The Swain Group were proud to support the BBC’s DIY SOS programme that showed the team building a rooftop garden at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital – one of the world’s leading children’s hospitals.
The challenge for Nick Knowles and the DIY SOS team was to transport a gold medal-winning garden from the Royal Horticultural Society’s Chelsea Flower Show across London, crane it over buildings and rebuild it on the hospital’s roof. The aim of the project was to give patients and their families access to a calming, private space within the hospital that could provide them with welcome respite.
From a logistics perspective the project was equally challenging, with a requirement to transfer 2,000 plants, and full-grown hedges and trees to an inaccessible rooftop site. The DIY SOS team contacted The Swain Group for help, and the company was proud to support the project with its specialist logistics skills.
“To assist with the move we deployed three of our 26-tonne flatbed vehicles to transfer the garden across Central London from the Chelsea Flower Show site to the Great Ormond Street Hospital site in Bloomsbury. We also supported the DIY SOS team in the run-up to the move by helping to deliver all the goods for the prep work for the hospital rooftop,” commented The Swain Group’s Commercial Director, Matthew Sweet. “We were proud to contribute towards the success of the project, mobilizing the right HGV vehicles and expert staff to ensure the complex transfer was completed safely and on time.
“DIY SOS did an amazing job in terms of creating such a valuable new facility for GOSH patients and their families,” he added, “so we were especially proud that a number of patients’ parents took the time to personally thank the Swain team for our contribution to the project. Now that the garden is fully installed, we hope it continues to provide a tranquil location during difficult times for the entire Great Ormond Street Hospital family.”
