Welcome to UK Haulier's ISO Shipping Container Check Digit Calculator. Just Enter your container number in the field on the right to calculate check digit according to ISO 6346:1995.
All containers used for international Container shipping, including tank containers, must have a unique container number. This unique number is made up of the following :-
- 1. Four letter prefix. The first three of which show the owner, the fourth is always a ‘U’ identifying the unit as a container. This is known as a BIC code. see Container Prefixes
- 2. For example KKTU – Relates to "K" Line (Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha Ltd)
- 3. Six digit serial number. This complete number is designated by the owner, contrived to own requirements.
- 4. A single check digit generated at the end.
The check digit is there to pick up any errors which might be caused by incorrect transcription of the registration number. It does not matter where on the globe you are, if you have a wrong check digit you have an invalid container number – and an invalid container number is impossible to trace through the seafreight shipping process.
Please start by entering the four digit prefix number which relates to the container owner code and then the six-digit container serial number to calculate the full shipping container number including the check digit. For example, KKTU779113.
